WHY WE BELIEVE
John 2:1-11
DAY 1
Do you know what was the first recorded question that Jesus asked? The
first question that Jesus asked during his 3.5 years of ministry is,
"What do you want?" Yes, that was His first question.
Let us look at John 1:35-38. This is where Jesus' first question is
recorded. John the Baptist were with his two disciples. When John saw
Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!" When the two
disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Turning around,
Jesus saw them following and said, "What do you want?"
If He asks you now, what do you want? What is your answer? Everyone
is looking for something. What are you looking for? Is it peace,
love,
significance, security, happiness, fullness of life and many others?
Let us continue with John 1:38-39. What was the answer of the two
disciples? The two disciples answered, "Teacher, where are you
staying?" They want to follow Jesus. So they went and spent that day
with him. Did it stop there at following Jesus for just one day? No!
The story continues in verse 40-42. One of the two disciples was
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter. He found his brother and tell him
that he has found the Messiah. And Andrew brought him to Jesus. From
that point on they follow Christ for the rest of their lives.
Everyone is looking for something, be it peace, love, significance,
security, or happiness. All of these things will be given unto you
ABUNDANTLY by Jesus Christ, the Messiah. You can search all around the
world and you will find that nobody can give you those things, only
Jesus can. Seek Him first, and all these things will be added unto you
abundantly.
DAY 2
Yesterday, we touch a little bit about Andrew. Today, we will see who
is Andrew. Andrew was John the Baptist's disciple (John 1:35-42).
Andrew heart was touched by John's message on repentance, he was
baptized by John and he looked at John as his teacher. Later, when
John said that Jesus was the Lamb of God, he followed Jesus. In fact,
Andrew was one of the first two disciples of Jesus. Andrew had an
obedient heart. All along, he was committed to be a disciple.
Now, the testimony of Andrew's life did not stop there. Andrew had a
brother. His brother is Simon Peter. Can you imagine having a brother
like Simon Peter. Simon is a charismatic, emotional and compulsive
leader. Most of the time Andrew was only known as Simon's brother; as
if he did not have his own identity.
Yet, when Andrew found Jesus, the FIRST thing that he did was to find
Simon, his brother. He approached his brother inspite of the fact that
he may not listen to him. Finally, Andrew succeeded in bringing Simon
to Jesus (verse 40-41).
If there were no Andrew, there may never be Simon Peter. Simon Peter
came to know Christ, because Andrew brought him to Christ. Yes, Andrew
did not keep the good news about a meaningful life in Christ to himself,
but he shared it with other people. He wanted other people to also know
the true meaning of life.
How about you? According to the statistics, 95% of Christians never
personally invited another human being to know Jesus Christ. Why don't
Christians share their hope and joy with other people? Because they are
afraid to be rejected, to be called fanatics, too shy, do not have any
time or any other excuses. The basic choice is simple. Do you love
your families and friends more (that you want them to have the kind of
happiness that you have in Christ) or do you love yourself more (that
you do not want to be rejected, ridiculed)?
Are you among the 95% or are you among the 5%? Do you want to be used
by God, just like Andrew. Andrew is not selfish. When he knew the good
news, the wanted to share it with other people. Do we want to share
the good news with our families and friends too? Be like Andrew!
DAY 3 - LESSON FROM ICE-HOCKEY GAME
Yesterday we have seen that Christians ought to share the good news with
others. We can do this as a team. Let us look at some examples from the Bible:
Andrew, he brought people to Christ by inviting them to join the
fellowship/gathering. John, the Baptist, he brought people to Christ by
preaching to the crowd. Do you remember the story about four people that
helped a cripple man to see Jesus? They brought people to Christ by
physically picking him up, helping him through the crowd and delivering
him home. They also brought him to Christ by praying and having faith.
Because the Bible recorded that when Jesus saw their faith (not the
cripple man's faith), His heart was moved. There are many more
examples.
Yes, these are some of the ways that people can bring people to know
Christ. We should work like teammates, just like what was displayed
in the ice-hockey game. There are some lessons that we can learn from
the ice-hockey game that we just saw a couple of weeks ago. Christians
are in a battlefield, we are on the ground and trying to win the fight.
We have to work together with our teammates to conquer the enemy. In
addition, just as GAME 6 was in Buffalo, in the enemy's battlefield, the
Dallas Stars has to give their best performance. Christians are also
fighting in the enemy's battlefield. The crowd is cheering for the
enemy, there is thousands and unlimited number of pressure from the
world around us as we are making any single move. Any single move
toward a winning point results in ?woos? from the crowd. Christians are
also under such a pressure; any single move closer toward God results
in woos from the people around us.
Finally, when the Dallas Stars win the game, they dance around the
enemy's battlefield and kissing the Lord Stanley's cup. Yes, Christians
ought to win the game also, and we can dance around the enemy's
battlefield and proved that we are soldiers of Christ and we are winning
the battle. But, for Christians, we will not be kissing the Lord
Stanley?s cup, instead we will be kissing the LORD JESUS' cup. At the
end of the game, awards are awaiting those FAITHFUL Christians.
DAY 4 - LOOK THROUGH
When Andrew and the other disciple were following Christ, most probably
they are following Him from a distance. When Jesus knew that they are
following him, Jesus turned back and LOOKED THROUGH them and asked them,
What do you want?? Yes, Jesus did not just look at them, but He
looked through them. He looked at their hearts and He seek to know what was
in their hearts.
That's how Jesus is looking at us also RIGHT NOW. He LOOKED THROUGH us,
He SAW us, He saw our hearts, and He is asking us, What do you want??
Friends, what do you want? Do you want happiness, joy, fulfilled life,
significant life, security and many others. Yes, that is what all
people want. Jesus can provide and can give those things to you. He is
the creator of the world and the creator of all of those things. He can
give those beautiful things to you. In fact, those are just the SIDE
benefits of following Him. If we follow Him, He will give us ETERNITY,
He will give us life. Along with following Him, those other things such
as security and happiness will be given.
So, friends, What do you seek?, What do you want?? Do you know
where to get it? Do not seek the fruit (like the happiness or fulfilled
life), but seek the TREE that can give you one fruit, more fruits, and more
ABUNDANT fruits.
That was the choice that Andrew and the other disciples made. They seek
the TREE. They want the Lord. They followed Him and their lives are so
much blessed with joy, happiness, security and many more.
DAY 5 - PRAYER
This past several weeks, we have seen many challenges to be what
Christians ought to be. But, it seems like the challenge is so tall, as
tall as a mountain, what can we do? Christians can PRAY. The following
are some verses and phrases from very godly man and woman about prayer.
Hope that this will be an encouragement for you all.
No prayer, no power; Little prayer, little power; More prayer, more power.
When we work, we work ; When we pray, God works (Oswald Smith)
God does nothing but in answer to prayer (John Wesley)
God's hand moves when people pray together.
Ask and it will be given to you; Seek and you will find;
Knock and the door will be opened to you (Mat 7:7)
Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive (Matt 21:22)
Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees. (William Cowper)
A day without prayer is a boast against God. (Owen Carr)
I have so much to do today that I must set apart more time than usul to pray (Martin Luther)
Pray hardest when it is hardest to pray (Charles H. Brent)
Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests (Eph. 6:18)
Prayer is our highest privilege, our gravest responsibility, and
greatest power God has put into our hands (The Kneeling Christian)
